In 1992 it was the inaugural season of the Premier League which replaced the Football League First Division. Here are the seven biggest clubs never to have played in the Premier League.
8. Tranmere Rovers
Tranmere Rovers are one of the biggest clubs never to have played in the Premier League. During the 90’s Tranmere lost three straight play-offs that could have earned them promotion to the Premier League.
The Merseyside club are one of the better supported clubs in the lower divisions and would be a good rival to Liverpool and Everton in the EPL. For now, the closest Tranmere will get to the Premier League is with club fan Mike Dean.

Tranmere Rovers fan and Premier League referee Mike Dean is in the away end tonight and as it stands, he’ll be heading to Wembley!

7 . Port Vale
Port Vale have spent most of their history in the second and third division. In fact they hold the record for the most seasons in the English Football League and second tier without reaching the top tier. The closest Port Vale got to reaching the Premier League was an 8th place finish at the end of the 1996-97 season finishing four points off the play-off spots.
6. Luton Town
Luton Town are one of the biggest clubs never to have played in the Premier League. They’ve spent most of their time in the First and Second Division. The club spent most of the 1980’s in the top division of football.
It would be heartbreak for Luton Town as they were relegated on the final day of the 1991-92 season after a loss to Notts County who were already facing the drop. Relegation meant that Luton Town would miss out on the first Premier League season following its launch later in 1992.

5. Notts County
Founded in 1862 Notts County are the oldest professional football club in the world and spent most of their early years in the First Division. Notts County featured in the final season of the old First Division but were relegated and missed out on the first Premier League season in 1992 alongside Luton Town. For the first time in 157 years the club were relegated out of the Football League in 2019.
4. Plymouth Argyle
Plymouth is the largest city in England never to have hosted a team that has played in the Premier League or top division of football. The closest Plymouth Argyle ever got to the top tier was in 1953 when they finished fourth in the second tier.
With crowds of close to 10,000 when playing in League Two, Plymouth Argyle have the potential to be a future Premier League promotion team and they even own their stadium which gives them greater financial stability.
I also believe Plymouth Argyle are the biggest sleeping giant in football – some 45 miles from the nearest League club & a catchment area stretching 90 miles into Cornwall. They could become a Premier League club one day with 40,000 crowds if they find the right business model https://t.co/v1aARkyB33

3. Millwall
In the late 80’s Millwall played their only two seasons in the top flight with a young Teddy Sheringham up front. One of the most underrated Premier League midfielders of all time Tim Cahill made a name for himself at the club. Despite being one of the biggest hooligan clubs in English football, the London club are well supported with good attendances, and one of the better stadiums outside the Premier League.
The year that Millwall earns promotion to the Premier League will be the year that the Premier League decides to reduce itself to 18 clubs.

2. Bristol City
Bristol is one of the biggest cities in England and Bristol City is one of the biggest clubs never to have played in the Premier League. They’re one of the best supported clubs outside the top division.
Founded in 1894 Bristol City have spent almost it’s entire history playing in either the second or third tier of English football. The last time the club played in the top division was in 1980 before the Premier League era began.
1. Preston North End
Preston North End were the first team to win a league title in 1888-89 and they went back-to-back the next season. Unfortunately they’re the only club to have won the top flight of English football and have never played in the Premier League.
Throughout the 2000’s Preston North End had failed four times during the play-offs for Premier League promotion. The club lost the 2001 and 2005 play-off Finals to Bolton and West Ham respectively. Preston North end remains the biggest Clubs Never to Have Played in the Premier League.
