Back to the Drawing Board for Stefanos Tsitsipas

After a second-round exit from the final Grand Slam of the year at the US Open, Stefanos Tsitsipas will be looking at how to put things right for the major events in 2024.

The season started brightly for the Greek star with a final appearance at the 2023 Australian Open and he will be eager to make sure he’s back playing at the business of Grand Slam events in the new year.

Disappointment In New York

The US Open has not been the kindest event for Tsitsipas over the years, as the Athenian has never made it past the third round. Tsitsipas, who is +1000 with a bet on tennis with Paddy Power to win the French Open next year, made a bright start to the 2023 US Open with a 6-2 6-3 6-4 victory over the experienced Canadian Milos Raonic.

However, Tsitsipas, who is +3000 in the tennis outrights betting to win Wimbledon next year, crashed out in the second round at Flushing Meadows. His exit from the tournament in New York City brought to an end another year with that maiden Grand Slam title still eluding him.

With the likes of Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal edging towards the end of their illustrious careers, Tsitsipas has been spoken of as one of the big names to fill the void in the future. At 25 years old, Tsitsipas still has plenty of time on his hands and the fact that he has already reached two Grand Slam finals, bodes well for what he might be able to achieve in the future.

Lessons Learned From 2023

Tsitsipas might still be left wondering what might have been after suffering a 6-3 6-6 7-6 defeat, as was reported by The Guardian, at the hands of Novak Djokovic in the Australian Open at the start of the year.

It does not get much tougher than facing the Serbian star on the hard courts in Melbourne and in the end, Djokovic’s experience of the big occasion came to the fore. Djokovic has won the Australian Open on 10 occasions and it was always going to be a big ask for Tsitsipas to cause an upset against the world number one.
Tsitsipas’ other Grand Slam final appearance to date came in 2021 with Djokovic once again the man in his way to a maiden major title at the French Open. That final in Paris is certainly one that got away, with Tsitsipas moving into the two-set lead, before an impressive fightback from Djokovic.

The journey to the final at Roland-Garros showed the world what Tsitsipas is capable on clay and he was able to do the same on hard courts by reaching the Australian Open final this year. This season has fallen away somewhat for Tsitsipas in the Grand Slam events, with a second-round exit at the US Open, which was covered by the BBC, hardly the way he would have wanted his major performances in 2023 to end.

There is still plenty to like about Tsitsipas’ game and with the potential and ability he has to do great things. The Greek star might have had some setbacks this season but he is certainly one the keep an eye out for in 2024.
